Performing as a Pianist in Birmingham
My name is Eugene Portman and I perform regularly as a pianist in Birmingham and West Midlands. There are quite a lot of good musicians in the region and a good proportion of them play the piano to a high standard.
This area has many venues ranging from pubs and restaurants to golf clubs and luxury hotels. They host many events and I play the piano for many of them throughout the year.
The Music
My main speciality is jazz and Birmingham provides plenty of scope for me as a pianist in this genre. My piano style has developed through listening to the great jazz pianists of yesteryear. These include such greats as Teddy Wilson, George Shearing, Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson. I play songs that have been made popular by the likes of Tony Bennet, Jack Jones, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole.
Because I play the piano for so such a large number of weddings in the Birmingham area, I have to be equally adept at playing many other genres of music including pop, rock, blues, classical, Latin and sing-along. This is so that I can play different genres for the various parts of the wedding day. For instance, classical music is often favoured for ceremonies, while jazz is often the preferred choice for drinks receptions.
Performing as a Sing-along Pianist in Birmingham
There has been a recent demand for sing-along pianists in Birmingham and the West Midlands area and I have responded to this. This sort of thing is popular for Peaky Blinders evenings, Wartime celebrations, and Cockney nights. I provide all the song sheets and I dress in true Cockney style with Bowler hat, red neckerchief, grandad shirt, waistcoat, pocket watch, etc. All you have to do is provide some enthusiastic singers who are not frightened of letting go of their inhibitions.
