Performing as a Pianist in Staffordshire
My name is Eugene Portman and I’m lucky to perform as a pianist for many events in the Staffordshire area. It is a beautiful area and has had many lovely venues. Firstly, these range from historic buildings such as Shugborough Hall, near Stafford and Keele Hall near Newcastle under Lyme. Secondly, there are modern venues such as the Holiday Inn in Burton on Trent. A wide choice of venues is available to anyone wishing to arrange an event or party in the area.
Staffordshire is big on jazz and some of my work in the area is as a pianist playing this style of music. This suits me well, as I have always been fond of jazz and swing. Having been a classically trained pianist, I started to listen to Erroll Garner. From then on, I was hooked on jazz. I then listened to other jazz keyboard greats such as Oscar Peterson, Teddy Wilson and others. My own personal playing style developed by listening and studying these greats musicians. As far as the music is concerned, I’m at home playing the old songs and standards. Songs made famous by the likes of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Tony Bennet.
A lot of my work as a pianist comes from the Staffordshire area is in the form of weddings. This demands a lot of versatility on my part. This is so that I can provide music for every part of the wedding day. For instance, classical music is often the preferred choice for ceremonies, while jazz is definitely the in-thing for drinks receptions. I play music from many genres and these include pop, jazz, rock, classical, Latin and sing-along.
Working as a Sing-along Pianist in Staffordshire
There has been a recent demand in the Staffordshire area for me as a sing-along pianist. This started around the London area, but it has now spread to Staffordshire and beyond. This sort of music is essential for Cockney themed events. However, it sometimes goes down really well for quite formal events. such as weddings.
When I play for this type of event I provide all the song sheets. I also arrive suitably attired in Bowler hat, pocket watch, and Albert chain, waistcoat, red neckerchief, etc. All that you have to do is provide me with an enthusiastic audience.
I perform as a solo pianist at most events in Staffordshire, but I have worked in larger line-ups. To explain, I can provide line-ups from duos right up to a five-piece jazz band. The latter would consist of piano, drums, bass, sax and vocals.
II use the very best musicians so that the music will be of the highest quality. You will find that I try and make the music have feel-good quality. I try to do this whether you book me as a soloist or the full jazz band. I hope this quality makes the music sit comfortably in any situation. Adding sparkle to your event without drowning conversation.
