Performing as a Pianist in Nottinghamshire.
My name is Eugene Portman and I have performed as a pianist in many of Nottinghamshire’s wonderful venues. These range from golf clubs such as Bondhay Golf Club and the one at Ruddington; to historic venues such as Hodsock Priory Near Worksop, and Stubton Hall near Newark. The county has a wide range of quality venues for anyone organising a wedding or any other event.
The Music
As far as music is concerned, my first love is jazz and Nottinghamshire provides me with lots of work as a jazz pianist. The music I play consists of songs composed by the great American songwriters of the past such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin. His piano style was forged by listening and studying the keyboard giants of yesterday. Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner, George Shearing and Teddy Wilson were pianists who were of particular influence.
Jazz is not the only style that I play, he is much more versatile than this. Because I work so much in Nottinghamshire as a wedding pianist, I have to perform many genres of music. This often involves playing different styles of music for the various parts of the day. The many styles I play include pop, rock, Latin, classical, ragtime, blues, and sing-along.
Performing as a Pub Singalong Pianist in Nottinghamshire
I’ve experienced a growing trend in the Nottinghamshire region to hire me as a sing-along pianist. Most of the events requiring this sort of thing tend to be Cockney themed. However, event quite formal functions (even weddings) sometimes require a sing-along at some point.
Peaky Blinders evenings in pubs seem to be the trend at the moment and I can provide everything for this. On the day, I’ll arrive with all the song sheets so that all you have to do is make sure that you have some enthusiastic singers waiting for me. Further to this, I will also dress in fitting attire consisting of bowler hat, red neckerchief, grandad shirt, waistcoat, pocket watch, etc.

Line-ups
My work in the Nottinghamshire area is usually as a soloist and I do enjoy performing as a solo pianist. However, I do the occasional party or event that requires a trio and I do have other line-ups available. These range from various duo line-ups right up to a five-piece jazz band consisting of piano, bass, drums, vocals, and sax. Whichever line-up you choose, you can rest assured that the musicians you get will be of the highest calibre.
Whether you book me as a soloist or the full jazz band, you will find that I try and make the music have a feel-good quality. I hope this quality makes the music sit comfortably in any situation, adding colour to your event without drowning conversation.
